What is Kidz in Lids?
Kidz in Lids mobilizes students to show concern for other local youth who are in a life or death struggle with cancer. IT’S SIMPLE – caring kids bring a dollar to school, and get to wear their favorite hat throughout the school day. All funds raised go to Children’s Cancer Partners of the Carolinas to help ensure Carolina children can access the lifesaving cancer treatments they desperately need. This is a great way to encourage the value of community service, create school spirit, and make students more aware of other students who are dealing with tremendous difficulties. Kidz in Lids engages students in giving and shows them that they have the power to make a difference in their community.
When does Kidz in Lids take place?
The Kidz in Lids program can take place on any school day that is convenient for your school. Some schools choose to participate during National Childhood Cancer Awareness Month in September but any day during the school year is fine. The event can be carried out on a single day, or extended to one day a week for over several weeks to generate greater participation and awareness.
Is this program just for students?
Teachers, Staff and Visiting Parents can jump in too – and wear their jeans all day if they bring in and contribute $5.
“The Kids and Lids Fundraiser at Broome was a fantastic initiative that promoted awareness of the issue of childhood cancer in our community, while providing a fun activity for our students that also contributed to a great cause.”
Brian, 12th grade, Broome High School

How did Kidz in Lids get started?
Paige, an energetic 5th grader got this all started by walking into her principal’s office at a Carolina middle school. She had some friends battling cancer, and wanted to do something for the annual September Childhood Cancer Awareness Month. Paige and her principal hatched this idea together and promoted it school wide. One of the parents offered to match the first $200 and when the first Kidz in Lids Day was over, Paige and her school had raised over $1,000!
“The Kidz in Lids program is not only a wonderful way to spread awareness regarding these brave children of the Carolinas and their families, but also a fun and easy way for our schools to provide our love and support.”
Lijah, 10th grade, Broome High School
Kidz in Lids is now promoted and sponsored by the Childhood Cancer Optimist Club and local Optimist International chapters. The funds raised help Children’s Cancer Partners of the Carolinas ensure that every Carolina child battling cancer has access to treatment, and an equal fighting chance. Through programs like this students learn a valuable lesson about working together with a common goal to help others!
A childhood cancer diagnosis is crushing for families. One parent leaves work to be a caregiver, but the bills still come. Pediatric cancer centers are few and far between so treatment travel, sometimes daily for months, is costly – and some treatments are only available in New York, Philadelphia, Houston or beyond. CCP provides these families with the funds needed for transportation, lodging and food associated with these vital treatments.
